I'm not familiar with the disposition of the remains of prisoners in transit for exchange. However, I would not believe that remains would be forwarded beyond the location of where they died.

In our case here, his route was to Point Lookout, Maryland prison camp via Baltimore. Then to the point of exchange which I believe would have been
City Point, Virginia.
