Re: 32nd Mississippi, Co. H
In Response To: 32nd Mississippi, Co. H ()

Lt. Storment signed the muster roll for the period Nov. & Dec., 1863 as Commanding Company. Capt. Tankersley was absent, on conscripting and recruiting service since May 15, 1863.

It was not all that unusual for Lieutenants to sign as commanding companies on the absence of their Captains.

Captain J. H. Tankersley, Commanding Company H, was dropped from the rolls on June 25, 1864.

2nd Lieut. Storment was wounded and sent to hospital July 22, 1864, hospitalized July 29, gunshot wound right arm shivering radius into upper 3d.

On July 24, 1864, 1st Lieutenant J. Y. Carmack was promoted Captain of the Company to take rank the date of Capt. Tankersley's departure. There were only 13 enlisted men remaining in the company at this time.

Carmack at the time was detailed to the staff of BGen. Lowry and remained so after his promotion.

Carmack later appears as Captain, Commanding Co. D, 8th Mississippi Battalion and commanding the battalion at the surrender, being paroled on May 1, 1865.

The 3rd Battalion, and 5th, 8th, and 32nd Regiments Mississippi Infantry were consolidated about April 9, 1865, and formed the 8th Battalion Mississippi Infantry.

I would assume that Company D of this organization was formerly Co. H of the 8th.

I doubt very much that Lt. Storment was never other than in temporary command of the company.
