Pvt John M. Smith, 37th Ala., a Vicksburg parolee, died at New Orleans 27 July 1863 while aboard the steamer H. Chouteau en route to Mobile and was buried the next day at Cypress Grove Cemetery No. 2 at New Orleans, Orleans Parish, La.
According to a claim filed by his father, Pvt William J. Harris, 37th Ala., yet another Vicksburg survivor aboard the H. Chouteau died 31 July 1863 and was buried at Point Clear, Ala., (presuming interment in the hospital cemetery there).
