Re: Oklahoma Confederate Home
In Response To: Oklahoma Confederate Home ()

Hi,

The term "inmate" was commonly used to describe veterans living at veteran's homes in the first half of the 20th century. While I can't say for sure about the Oklahoma Home and the particular situation in question, veterans were almost NEVER sent to Veteran's Homes against their will and were always free to leave the home if it wasn't to their satisfaction. Granted, they may not necessarily be welcomed back or they could have been kicked out but leaving on their own accord was always an option. Homes were supposed to be pleasant places and wouldn't be if people were kept there who didn't want to be there making everyone miserable. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hope this helps,
Lisa
