Jerry --

Porter J. Myers had a son named Theodore who served briefly (discharged late 1861) with the "Kennedy Guards" of Perry County MS, Co. "G", 27th Mississippi Regt. We might expect Porter Myers to have been involved with his son's company, but he's not mentioned there.

You said he was an officer of the 24th Mississippi Regiment. Only one of the companies assigned to the 24th Mississippi (Co. "A", the "Gaines Warriors" of Perry and Greene Counties) was recruited anywhere near the Myers plantation. Checking company and regimental officers of both regiments (24th and 27th), I do not find the name Myers or anything like it on record.

As mentioned earlier, we find that he sold farm products to a Confederate cavalry command. Unless there is some other reliable source of information about him, I would have to conclude that he was never in Confederate service. Possibly he assisted with organization of a company but could not join due to medical advice or other constraints. What source do you have to show otherwise?
