Hi Nancy:

I suppose that I could have a false memory of seeing Confederate graves along the roadway on the right as I drove into the State Park towards the Frank Gardner Memorial Interpretive Center. But there is nothing in my folder on Fort Pillow to confirm this, so I guess I was wrong. I just went through my photo collection without finding any photos of these phantom graves. A sign in the museum declared that General Forrest had 14 men killed and 86 wounded in the April 1864 assault. Those who were killed in action, or died in a first aid center near the fighting would have been buried near where they fell. Some of the wounded could have been evacuated to hospitals to the west and died there. The army did not haul bodies around in those days.

You need to find a Sons of Confederate Veterans group, or a local UDC Chapter in western Tennessee and ask for their help. Wouldn't hurt to take a driving trip and visit Fort Pillow State Historic Park! And, I guess it won't hurt to check with the National Cemetery at Memphis as well to ask about the removal of the Union remains from Fort Pillow.

Sorry I can't help you any more than I have since I live in Pennsylvania.

Hugh
