Nancy:

I remember seeing rows of markers for the Confederate dead. The burial ground is on the side and top of a ridge and now covered with trees. I did not get out and walk around as I was looking for the 1862 burial sites of the Confederates stationed there and did not pay a whole lot of attention to the 1864 burials. The 1862 dead were buried at Randolph down the Mississippi River, and near "Camp Green" which was some 6 to 8 miles east of Fort Pillow about where the Tennessee State Penitentiary facilities are now.

Anybody know anything about the Green Chapel cemetery which is surrounded by the state prison facilities?

You need to make a telephone call or e-mail contact with the State Park historian at Fort Pillow. He (or she) will be happy to help you find your ancestor's grave, if it is marked. And happy to collect your documentation and family research information as well! I found the staff supportive and interested in my quest.

Good luck!!

Hugh
