Re: J.T. Duckworth CO B/46th. Photo

J.T.'s military records, on the Jan/Feb 1864 muster roll, indicate his promotion from 1st Sgt. to 2nd Lt. on Dec. 8, 1863. But it also notes "for the present commanding co. C 40 MS reg't." W.P. Chambers' journal also mentions the examinations and promotions, as well as that later in December 1863 the 40th was sent up as pickets while the 46th was working on roads near Resaca, GA. Was this typical, to have a 2nd Lt. from one regiment's company temporarily commanding a company from a different regiment?

Chambers was pretty good about mentioning examinations, officers elections and promotions, but doesn't refer to another one for Duckworth before Allatoona Pass. Chambers was wounded in that battle and did not rejoin the regiment until the following January, well after Duckworth had been captured at Nashville. I'm guessing from his notes there would be two 2nd Lts. per company, Jr. and Sr.?
