I think you’re on the right track, and think the kid’s memory was faulty as to which Hendley it was. Almost certainly the Hendley we’re talking about was George w. Hendley. Now that I’ve been keying in on the surname and combing through my files I’ve been coming up with other Battle of Albany accounts referring to Captain George Hendley. Pretty much covering a lot of the ground you have. After the war he —George— was familiarly called Captain Hendley for life, and used a pen name of Old Reb. Richmond banker Thomas Hankins kept a diary that spoke prominently of George Hendley commanding a column in the Albany fight, and commanding the Fishing River camp. Hankins was in the fight on the Federal side, Co. D, 51EMM.
