Re: The Confederate Army at Vicksburg

During the Vicksburg Campaign Bowen’s division was made up of two brigades: Cockrell’s and Greene’s (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicksburg_Confederate_order_of_battle). Cockrell’s is generally referred to as “The Missouri Brigade”. The rest of the Missouri units were in Green’s along with some Arkansas regiments. After Vicksburg all the Missouri units were merged into Cockrell’s brigade. I have two ancestors who served in the 3rd Battalion Missouri Cavalry (dismounted). They were brigaded with Greene during Vicksburg, then Cockrell afterward. One ancestor died at Champion’s Hill.

Here are two favorite Ed Bearss' quotes about those Missouri boys:

"Cockrell's Missouri Brigade was the best on either side, including the Stonewall Brigade and the Iron Brigade of the North.”

“Cockrell’s Missouri Brigade makes the Stonewall Brigade look like the Little Sisters of the Poor.”
