Mary,

It appears from census records that Martin was the son of Basil Trail of Williamson Co TN. Basil is in the Cole Co MO census in 1830 contributing to the record that Martin was born in 1833 in Cole Co MO. Basil is then found in Moniteau Co Mo in the 1840 census and he and martin are both listed by name in Moniteau Co MO in 1850. Basil is then found in the Wyndotte Co KS elector census in 1855. This clearly eliminates the possibility of the Trail family being of Delaware or Shawnee indian descent. (Those came to area from Ohio and Indiana in the late 1820's and 30s.) I quickly scanned the Dawes packets and did not find the Trail family listed as a Cherokee or one of the other civilized tribes. FWIW Mary Trail Martin's youngest daughter married a Stewartson and had children living in Oregon and California.
