This is fantastic- thank you! Now I know that my brother not only resembles GG Grandpa, but acts like him too! From Ancestry I have a record for James Steakley in 1908 at U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Sawtelle, Los Angeles, Ca. Age at admission 66. Service record states he enlisted 8 Aug 1861 to 12 Dec 1861 Co. B First Battalion, Mo. Home Guard (Fremont's Rangers). The rest of his service is the same on this record. His stated disabilities were Rheumatism, Myalgia, Hyp. Prostate, and Injury to head in Service.
[Historical Register of National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1866-1938; (National Archives Microfilm Publication M1749, 282 rolls); Records of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Record Group 15; National Archives, Washington, D.C.]
He was in Missouri for the 1900 and 1910 censuses, so I'm not sure how long he stayed in California.
Thanks again for this, I really appreciate it.
