enlisted December 12, 1861 at Cape Girardeau, 20 year old Farmer, born in White, Tenn., 5' 10", hazel eyes, fair complexion, sandy hair, promoted Corporal 1862, furnished horse & equipments from Feb 28 to Apr 22, 1863, captured April 22/23, 1863 at Patterson, Mo./April 25 in St Francis County, Mo., present at Benton Barracks, St. Louis, Mo. with Paroled Men July/Aug, 1863, arrested in St. Louis county, Mo. August 21, 1863, arrived Myrtle Street Prison, St. Louis same day, attempted to shoot City Policeman,

"Thomas Smith being duly sworn upon oath says, I belong to the City Police of the Central District. On the night of the 20th inst., I and my partner, Mr. Moore (who is also a Policeman) were called uponto go to Ebert's Saloon on Vine Street. We found in Said Saloon a Soldier witha Revolver who refused to pay his Bill & threatened to shoot the Bar Keeper. When we went in the woman that was with him told him to keep quiet that the Policeman were present. He remarked that he did not care a damned for the Police that he would shoot them as quick as he would a Squirrel. Then Mr. Moore told him to put up his revolver. He waid he would not, but that he would shoot him. Hen then Endeavored to take the Pistol from him And he made several Efforts to shoot & would have done it if I had not stepped up & held him. discharged/released August 28 by request of his Major, promoted 7th Sergeant August 1863, subsequently recorded as 8th Sergeant, promoted to 2nd Lieutenant December 1864. mustered out of service January 31, 1865
