Re: Rebel "Buck" Odeal Killed Apr-May65 in Centrl

There is a Humphrey Cathey(30)(Missouri) located in Morgan Co in 1850 census dwelling 297 that appears to be the son of Joseph(54) and Hannah Cathey(49) natives of North and South Carolina.

Further it appears that a Joseph M Jolly(32) is next door to the above house hold in dwelling 298 with wife Rebecca.

Following this name we have 2 land grants 40 acres each to a Humphrey Cathey in 1843 and 1848 in Morgan County.

I can find Humphrey Cathey's mother and 2 sisters in the 1860 census in Syracuse but nary a male of any sort.

Trying to get a handle on this we end up in 1870 chasing Rebecca Jolly(native of N. Carolina) who appears in the 1870 census with none other than an Alonzo Cathey age 9 in Lamine, Cooper County. In 1880 she appears in St. Louis living with Martin A Cathey age 20 listed as a nephew. She also appears in St. Louis City Directories as widowed wife of Joseph M Jolly She passes away in St. Louis June 14, 1897 buried at St. Mathews cemetery.

So I propose that this represents the Joe Jolly and Humphrey Cotty listed in the Morgan Co. History.

Joseph Jolly was Humphrey Cathey's brother-in-law via Rebecca (Cathey) Jolly. They had land as neighbors in Morgan Co. In 1860 Joseph M Jolly is back at "home" in Lamine, Cooper County with his brothers as previously posted and below.

"The first Circuit of Howard County (which at that time included Cooper County, was held at the house of Joseph Jolly in Hannah Cole's Fort, situated in what is now Hannah Cole's Fort. It opened July 8, 1916 and discharged, under the territorial laws, all the duties of the Circuit, County and Probate Courts of the present days." From "Historic Sites Map of Cooper County, Missouri", compiled and published by the American Revolution Bi-centennial Commission of Cooper County, MO. This would be Joseph Jolly (elder) as alluded to in the Cooper County History and thus our subject Joseph M Jolly (younger) grandfather I believe. Joseph M Jolly's father being John Jolly ( wife was Diana McGee?) as in the son of Joseph the elder and brother to William Jolly the pioneers of Cooper County and "Jolly Bottoms" listed in the Cooper Co History. As stated before the 1860 census gives us an inkling:

Name: Jo M Jolly
Age in 1860: 28
Birth Year: abt 1832
Birthplace: Missouri
Home in 1860: Lebanon, Cooper, Missouri
Gender: Male
Post Office: Fair Point
Value of real estate: View image
Household Members: Name Age
John Jolly 30 M
E A Jolly 28 F
R C Jolly 5 F
Jane Jolly 3 F
Ally Jolly 2 F
J D Jolly 1 M
Jo M Jolly 28 M
B F Jolly 29 M

Now comes the fun part and I have no proof but Bruce you asked for a common thread so here is one. Through all this tortured wandering we get to the point again where none other than our friend Benjamin F Jolly (brother to Joseph M Jolly) in the above listed census shows up as being one of the fellows that was in 52 EMM Co A enlisted and doing whatever from July 1862 to Dec. His card is here and shows his enlistment in Syracuse. http://www.sos.mo.gov/Images/Archives/Military/s00794/s00794_0562.pdf
Follow on is here with his regular service. Age and location are right: http://www.sos.mo.gov/Images/Archives/Military/s00862/s00862_1661.pdf

So we have Goods and Jollys with Leonard in late 1862 that all end up with brothers and fathers dead in retribution or Union spite. I end up again in the same place with the same group of guys....

Perhaps this is the same "Union Militia" bunch operating out of Booneville that did in Dr George Main in August 62 at Scotland.
and or took Gentry from the jail at Booneville and murdered him in Oct 62. Behavior that certainly would have made an impression on the local bushwackers and is consistent with behavior to call out Buck Odneal in Tipton in Dec 1862.

Or it all could be coincidence. :>)
FWIW
