Re: Rebel "Buck" Odeal Killed Apr-May65 in Centrl

Ok lets connect some dots.

"There were nine Union and three southern men killed within its borders. The southern men who were killed were, Benjamin Hill, William Henshaw and Radford Bass. These men were murdered at or near their homes, about the last of September, 1864, by a scouting party of Union soldiers, being a part of the command of Col. Hall, Missouri State militia. They were not belligerents, and the cause of their being slain is unknown.

The Union soldiers who were killed, were slain by "bushwhackers" from Howard and Boone counties, seven of them on the 7th day of October, 1864, and two of them on the 27thday of May, 1865. The following is a list of them: Henry Weber, Franz Haffenburg, Jacob Eder, David Huth, Bernhard Deitrick, Gerhardt Blank, Peter Diehl, Jacob Good, Sr., Jerry Good, Jr. There was also a "bushwhacker," whose name is. unknown, killed on the 27th day of May, 1865."

Jacob W Good was in 52 EMM Co F (Mahan) Jan 1 63 to April 1st 63 then was detached to Capt Leonard's company.
Jerimiah Good was in 52 EMM Co C (Childs) Jan 1 to April 1st 63 then was detatched to Capt Leonard's company.
John W Good was in 52 EMM Co C (Childs) Jan 1 to April 1st 63 then was detatched to Capt Leonard's company then became part of Julius Sombarts Cooper Co Provisional EMM for the duration of 200 days August '64 to March 12 '65

Peter Diehl is in the 1st MSM in 62 disabled out but shows back up in an outfit called Dietrich's Cooper Co Provisional EMM along with the following: Bernhard Dietrich, Jacob Eder, Franz Hafferburg, David Huth all of which were killed in action at Big Lick MO Oct 7 1864 see: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/soldiers/results.asp?sType=unit&txtUnit=Dietrich's%20Cooper%20County%20Provisional%20Company%20E.M.M.&selConflict=Civil%20War

Capt Leonard referred to above was Capt Charles E Leonard born 1839 to Nathaniel and Margaret Leonard he is found in 1860 census in Palestine Twsp Cooper County pg 104. So he was a local for sure and I can't tell you what this bunch did while "detached" for 23 days in May of 1863. http://www.sos.mo.gov/Images/Archives/Military/s00794/s00794_0609.pdf but the Goodes were in on it. All 3 are found in 1860 census Gooches Mill Saline Twsp Cooper Co. in the same household.

Joe Shelby camped at the Leonard homestead on Oct 10th 1863 FWIW. It appears that Leonard as Capt of Co H 52 EMM was running around the countryside for Lt Col. Pope as early as Sept 10 1862 til Jan 12th 1863. The 52 EMM suposedly was not activated until Jan 1 1863 but clearly Leonard had a Company out and about prior. Further when the 52 EMM was deactivated Leonard and a select group of men (his old Co H? maybe) carried on as a detached unit for at least officially 23 more days.

Running the SOS file for Leonard's detachment is the following result with the official Company assignment:

Of these most all of them have enrollment listings from California/Syracuse MO in July 1862, Pisagh July 10 1862, or Booneville August 1862. There is 46 total. So what was Capt Leonard's bunch up to between July 1862 and Jan 1 1863? I suspect therein lies the story of Buck Odneal's death.
