Joe doing a bit of picking around in the Confederate CSR's I've the following regarding a John Baker in 10th Missouri. Working backwards

John Baker, 1st Sarg't Co D, 10th MO Consolidated Infantry resident Dent Co MO commanded by Col Wm M Moore surrendered by Smith at New Orleans LA on May 26 1865 and paroled Camp Allen LA on June 8, 1865

Srg't Co D 10th Mo Regt. Muster roll Jan & Feb 1864 Present

Srgt Co D 10th MO Regt. Muster roll April 30 to Aug 31, 1863 Present

5th Srgt Co D 10th MO Regt. Muster roll March & April 1863 Present

Appears on a list of Prisoners captured and paroled by Lt Col Stuart, 10th Illinois Cav at Van Buren Ark on Jan 25, 1863. Member of Co D Steen's Regt.

5th Srgt Co D Steen's Regt Muster roll Sept 19 to Dec 31 1862 Present

5th Sgt Co. D Steen's Regt* thru Oct 1862 payroll Enlisted March 1 1862 by Col W. O. Coleman Fulton Co Arkansas for 3 yrs.
Aug 1 1862 5 Months Cav at $24 per month, 1 Month, 19 days Cav at $29 per month, and 1 Month, 12 days Inf at $17 per month.
* This Company was formerly Co D, Picketts Battalion Missouri Infantry and was composed of men from Companies A,B and F Coleman's Regiment Missouri Cavalry

Other comment on the CSR cards state:

"The 10th Missouri infantry (also known as 1st Regiment Missouri Infantry and Steen's Regiment Missouri Infantry) appears to have been organized about November 1862 by the consolidation of Steen's and Pickett's Battalions Missouri Infantry, together with men of Preist's and Winston's Regiments Missouri State Guard Infantry and Coleman's Regiment Missouri Cavalry and from a Col Johnston's Cavalry command."

The Coleman's Regiment unit history in Jim McGhee's pivotal work "Guide to Missouri Confederate Units" pg 168, tells us that Coleman received his appointment and authorization to raise a regiment on June 20 1862. He was already in command of 8 companies cavalry presumably part of the 7th Division Missouri State Guard. Coleman failed to complete organization and his companies dismounted by late Sept 1862 after Gen Hindman cashiered Coleman out of the CSA on July 31, 1862.

There is also a John H Baker 4th Corporal Co A, Steen's regiment enlisted Sept 1, 1862 Camp Mitchell by Col McClarty for duration of the war. Appointed Nov 10 1862. In Aug 1863 he is listed as 2nd Corp Co A. 10th MO Inf. A record of transfer exists on Nov 11, 1863 transferring to Pioneer Corps at Camp Bragg from Co A, Moore's 10th MO Infantry. Which I think is your fellow
from your post.

From this record it can be inferred that Corp. Baker was a founding member of Co A Steen's Regiment. From "Price's Lieutenants" Peterson pg 84 we find that William Moore was adjutant of the 5th Cav Regiment (Preist's), 2nd Division MSG and after Pea Ridge oraganized Co A Steen's Regiment and listed himself as Capt. and entered CSA service the summer of 1862. Moore became 2nd in command of the 10th after Ltc Chappell was killed at Prarrie Grove. Another interesting note about Moore he passed his Engineering Boards in Dec. 1863 thus qualifying himself to lead Pioneer or Egineering units.

Review of Census records finds John H Baker with child Maud age 2 and wife Maggie in Louisiana in 1880. This lists John Baker's year of birth as 1839 in Virginia. The only matches in 1860 census in Missouri is a family in Franklin Co, MO near Union MO father's name is Corba(i)n Baker and a John Baker in Lewis Co Missouri (b 1841) working as a laborer. (Lewis Co was the home county of Col Wm Moore above, FWIW, birds of a feather, etc...) The only extended Baker family in Lewis Co MO in 1860 from Virginia belongs to a William M Baker (b 1818, VA). So if you know paternity we can likely nail this down a bit tighter. I suspect that if the Lewis County John Baker (assuming he is your Corp John H Baker) saw action before 1862 it was with Preist and Moore in the 5th Cav, 2nd Division, MSG.
