The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: South Central Missouri Civil War Roundtable

No, my father knew what it was and gave the bayonet to me for Christmas one year. Its one of my prized possessions in my Civil War collection of bullets, pots, glass and ceramic shards found in the Rolla Union camps. I do mark those buildings and photograph them from every angle, inside and out. The Belgian muskets were sent out here in the west and issued out to Union soldiers. There are probably others who can tell you more about them here is Missouri. When trying to raise Confederate troops near Cape Girardeau in 1861, General M. Jeff Thompson claimed to have "40,000 Belgium muskets coming" to supply the new recruits. Whether those numbers were real or imagined, the Belgian muskets were here in Missouri. Soldiers claimed they kicked like a mule, same as the Austrian guns. I believe the Belgian musket was a .78 caliber. Its interesting that here in Missouri, we had oldest and newest technology in weaponry. Outdated muskets were in the arsenals yet, one of the most interesting items found in the Rolla Union camps were brass cartridges for Henry rifles. I have a photo (appears to be during or immediately after the war) of a Phelps/Dent County bushwacker James "Genuine Jim" Alexander Jamison showing him with a Henry cradled in his lap. And by the way, I have read "Guns of the South" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter", enjoying both as 'what if..' fiction.
