Re: H. C. Cogswell-John D. holt

Thanks for the input. You've cleared up some things about Cogswell.
Cogswell: His farm and sawmill were on the south bank of the Marmaton in Vernon near Deerfield. Word came to him that Montgomery was coming with 300 men (didn't happen) so he loaded up and moved to Bates where his father-in-law had moved. The 1860 census caught him there. He was back in Vernon when Jennison raided his place, but he was already in Hunter's Regt. at the time.

John D. Holt grew up in Clay and lived there in 1860, 1870 and 1880. That's why I wondered about Connelly's statement. I went back and looked and in one place he said "Nevada's Col. John D. Holt" and another "Col. John D. Holt from Vernon County". He may have just confused the counties.

I didn't know about Quantrill and Marchbanks. Thanks for that info.
