H. C. Cogswell-John D. holt

I've been researching Guerrillas with Vernon County connections (my home county).
Two statements that I have found puzzle me. Any help would be appreciated.
.
1. Henry Clay Cogswell, Vernon Co., was a distinguished Confederate officer with Hunter, then the CSA in MO, AR and LA.
Peterson, and later, The Daily Mail (Nevada), state that he joined Quantrill after Jennison raided his home.
He was already a Capt. in Hunter's Regt. when that happened, then he went into the CSA as a 1st Lt. when his term in the State Guard expired, and served through the Red River Campaign.
I find no record that he was ever with Quantrill. Was he ever with Quantrill? When?
.
2. Connelly, writing about the Lawrence Raid, says "Nevada's Col. John D. Holt".
I have found no connections between Holt and Nevada or Vernon Co.
As you probably know, he was from Clay Co.
He recruited in the border counties, but I don't think he ever recruited that far South.
Any idea what Connelly meant?
