I hope you will not be insulted if I humbly suggest a couple of sources for your riverboat study. More than likely you use these already.
--Frederick Way, Jr. "Way's Packet Directory, 1848-1994," by Ohio University Press, has some flawed Civil War stuff in it, but is better for the complete catalog of all the river steamers that carried passengers and freight in the Mississippi River system. The boat specifications are good, too, especially for comparisons.
--Charles Dana Gibson and E. Kay Gibson, compilers "The Army's Navy Series: Dictionary of Transports and Combatant Vessels Steam and Sail Employed by the Union Army, 1861-1868," copyright 1995 by Ensign, Press of Camden Maine.

I used Way all the time, but I probably should use the Gibsons more.
