Re: William Pinkney Mitchell- Quantrill raider?

James Deem or Jim Deem, as folks knew him, lived near Corn Creek in Phelps county in the neighborhood of Bushwacker Bill Wilson. He was known as a bushwacker and is mentioned in the Bushwacker book by George Clinton Arthur. According to Arthur, Jim was shot to death by Union soldiers while he was attempting to read a letter with one foot in the stirrup of his horse's saddle. His father, Old Man Deem as he was called - his actually name was Phillip - was supposed killed by Union soldiers while hiding in a nearby cave. Bill Wilson killed wolves who were feasting on the corpse of Old Man Deem. Recently, I read another earlier transcipt which suggests Old Man Deem was the one shot to death by approaching Union soldeirs or dragged to death when he was reading the letter.
