Re: William Pinkney Mitchell- Quantrill raider?
In Response To: Re: William Pinkney Mitchell ()

I was interested in this post because William Pinkney Mitchell was a brother to my great great great grandfather Sherrill Lewis Mitchell who fought for the North. William was born in Licking, Texas County, Missouri in 1840. His father had moved the family there from Sparta, Tennessee a few years earlier. It was one of those families that some of the brothers fought for the South and some for the North. I'm sure there were several heated discussions in that family.

My question is since the rosters show that William Pinkney Mitchell served in Col. Coleman's, 8th MO Infantry Co. C Confederates and Col. Thomas R. Freeman's regiments, were any of those Confederate units considered some of the notorious bushwhackers of this area of Missouri? It doesn't seem like he would have been with Quantrill because they were in a different section of Missouri. Yet, family stories seem to have a bit of truth in them to be passed along. Any thoughts on who he might have been involved with in the Licking, Texas County, Missouri area?
