Ministering to the Troops

I do know that a number of priests and ministers went with Louisiana troops off to war. There is book about one, who was with the 14th La in the ANV. IF I could remember his name I would write it down.

Question, I would suspect that most towns in rural Louisiana were too small to have a formal church with services. Would they have had a lay minister/priest in town or a circuit rider minister/priest to provide services to the town and surrounding areas? I tried to do some research on this, but have not been lucky in finding out about this.

Any direction would be appreciated.
