Historical Data Systems, otherwise, the American Civil War Research Database core displays an abstract of soldiers Compiled Service Record File. Additionally, contributors sometimes add additional data, such as Confederate Veteran references, photos, post war data, death information, etc.

I use Ancestry.com on occasion mainly to check on pensions and government provided gravestones. However, it is not that as easy to use.

Muster rolls were conducted at the Company level, in the field, for pay purposes on a bi-monthly basis, and are the documents used mainly for constructing a soldiers service. They were usually held the last day of the period, or shortly thereafter. However, operations frequently forced postponement and were held at later dates.

Joseph Gevedon, Capt. Andrew J. May's Company, Kentucky Infantry,* enlisted October 21, 1861 at Prestonsberg, Ky. by Lt. R. B. Thomas for 12 months, sworn into service at West Liberty October 21, present at the November 23, 1861 muster, no other records

Note: The Companies muster roll for the period Dec. 31, 1861 to Apr. 30, 1862 apparently did not record his status. The previous muster roll for the period Nov. 24 to Dec. 30, 1861 is missing from the records. It would seem as he was no longer recorded, he must have been dropped from the rolls. This could have been because of discharge, transfer, capture, death, desertion, etc. We do not know. The two other Gevedon's of Company A, most likely kin, are recorded up to the date of the Companies muster-out.

* This company subsequently became Capt. Mynheir's (1st) Company A, 5th Regiment Kentucky Infantry (Mounted)
