Re: account of 2nd Colorado Vols at Honey Springs

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the invitation. I'd like to subscribe to several digests but didn't see the link; was I looking in the wrong place?

My 5,400 figure is a typo; should have been 4,400! The 29th Texas started the battle with 360 men and was probably typical; each of the Indian regiments was credited in Confederate reports as having 800-900 men and in Union reports as having around 600 men. The two indpendent squadrons had about 60 men each(*) and Lee's battery roster lists 36 privates, 3 sergeants, four lieutenants, and one captain. (* Scanland had 4 officers, 4 sergeants, 3 corporals, 1 bugler, and 60 privates). So . . . about 1,200 Texians, about 3,100 Indians?

Here's a portion of a letter published in a Colorado newspaper:

Aug 20, '63

Letter from Lieut. Col. Dodd, Ft. Blunt, Cherokee nation, July 25,'63

Cherokee nation, Honey Springs
Battle at ^ on 17th Gen. Blunt Commanding.
Our force about 2,200 strong crossed Ark. R. At mouth of Grand on 16th and at Honey Sprs. 25 mi. At 8½a.m.

Enemy commanded by Gen. Cooper, about 4,000 Battle commenced 9½a.m.
My whole battalion was ordered to deploy as skirmishers & to move forward on the enemy's . . .

Perhaps Dodd (like most) overestimated the enemy and under reported his own force. (If you add the numbers in each independent Federal report appended to Blunt's in the ORs I think you get about 3,400 Federals, in spite of the number in Blunt's own report.)
