The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Comanches allied to Confederacy

There were apparently some Shawnee from Kansas in the 1st Indian Home Guard and the 15th Kansas Cavalry. I believe these Kansas Shawnee lived with the Seneca in Kansas and are the roots of the Shawnee Nation headquartered in Miami OK who had been adopted Cherokee until separating some years ago. There are still many Shawnee who are citizens of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, predominately around Craig County.

If I have this right, the present Eastern Shawnee were with the Seneca who already had a reserve in Indian Territory at/near their present location and signed a treaty with the Confederacy (Pike). Those with the Seneca in Kansas came to Indian Territory after the war and were adopted into the Cherokee Nation.
