Re: Tarlton Bull, DeMorse's 29th Cav, Co E

Well I looked half the day -- finally found this --

Article from “Chronicles of Oklahoma”

. . .

On September 14th, 1864, the combined forces of two brigades began their long trip north. The Indian Brigade consisted of the First Cherokee Regiment, Lt. Col. C. N. Vann commanding; Second Cherokee Regiment, Major John Vann commanding: First Creek Regiment, Lt. Col. Samuel Checote commanding; Second Creek Regiment, Col. T. Barnett commanding; and Seminole Battalion under Col. John Jumper. The troops of the Indian Brigade numbered 800. The composition of Gen. Gano’s troops was as follows: Thirtieth Texas Cavalry, captain S. M. Strayhorn commanding; Thirty-first Texas Cavalry, Major Michael Looscan commanding; Twenty-ninth Texas Cavalry, Lt. Col. Otis G. Welch commanding; Martin’s Battalion of Texas Cavalry, Major W. N. Mayrant commanding; Gano Guards, Capt. William G. Welch commanding; and Howell’s Battery of six guns, Capt. Sylvanus Howell commanding. The combined cavalry and artillery troops numbered about 1200 troops. There were therefore, 2000 men in the combined brigades.

. . .

On the night of Sept. 17, the train camped on Horse Creek, where a message was received from the commanding officer at Fort Gibson that a rebel force of 12 to 1500 men was heading north.

. . .

end of quote.

This article says Lt. Col Otis G. Welch was commanding the 29th Texas, not DeMorse. It also says the 29th Texas Cavalry was at this 2nd battle of Cabin Creek where a large train of booty was captured. It also confirms one thing that Tarlton said -- it says the "train" camped on Horse Creek, and that is where Tarlton's sister said his father died -- on Horse Creek! Tarlton said his horse stood over his father's grave at that battle, and it seems to have been fought at/near Horse Creek. That's what I was looking for when I posted here. Maybe some of what he said was embellished -- I have no way of knowing -- but this part seems true.

His brother couldn't have been a POW for 2 years however as the war was over in 8 or 9 months. I suspect George Bull was captured at an earlier battle.
