The Georgia in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Arguably, the last living Confederate in GA.

Hey Greg, I agree with your analysis. One of the things I learned while looking into this particular issue the last Confederate is the amount of fraudulent pensions that were paid out to imposters. This is not to say Mr. Bush filed a fraudulent pension claim.

I had not realized that he had given an interview of his experience at Gettysburg. The State of Pennsylvania created a commission for the 75th Gettysburg reunion in 1938. According to their records 63 former soldiers from Georgia attended. It would be interesting to find out if Mr. Bush was in attendance. Unlike the 50th reunion in 1913 the Federal Government paid for the Confederates trip to Gettysburg.

Perhaps because I'm a bit native I have a tendency to believe Mr. Bush because of his Masonic background and because he appeared to be a God fearing man.

It would also be interesting to see where Mr. Bush was living say during the 1900 census and see if he belonged to a UCV Camp in his area. Many times those camps knew who was a true Confederate and who was not.
