Your assumptions appear to be exactly right. He was brought home to die from wounds received at Resaca.
Based on his compiled service record he was received a gunshot wound 5/10/64 at Resaca. The ball entered above his right hip and passed through his abdominal cavity. The wound was considered fatal and a medical examining board at Dalton on 5/12/64 furloughed him for 60 days at the insistence of his family who lived nearby. He had enlisted at Franklin two years earlier, so it makes sense that you have found his grave near there.
