Battles around Dalton

Where would wounded confederate soldiers, from battles around Dalton, be sent? I have found a grave with the inscription on the head stone "Died June 2, 1864------Died from wounds received in battle May 9th---age 20 years". He is buried here in Heard County, in the family cemetery, so I am thinking his family went to where ever he was, to bring him home to die. I was just interested as to how far they had to travel to bring him home. His name was Noah Perry Strickland, Co. K, 56th regt. Georgia.
