Hello Katie, Not only your ancestor but everyone that I checked about 10 had no confederate enrollment records in Company D 9th Regiment, Georgia Infantry for the summer of 1863 save Federal POW records. Your ancestor appears to have been on recruiting duty is South Georgia and well as furlough time and was paid .75 a day up until March 15, 1863. There is no indication that he did NOT return for duty for the Gettysburg campaign. Since he enlisted at Fort Gaines, Georgia there is only one newspaper off the top of my head that was in print during this time and still can be read. It was a newspaper in Blakely, Georgia and the newspaper is at the Early County, library not too far from Fort Gaines, Georgia about 30 miles. That particular newspaper seemed to like to report those soldiers home from the front and there may be something in the paper about him? I've glanced through the paper several times, some good stuff in it. Best of Luck!
