"In mid-June 1864, near Kennesaw Mountain, Wilson’s command, approximately seven hundred strong, was attached to Johnston’s Army of Tennessee and joined the four Georgia regiments of Brigadier General Alfred Cumming’s Brigade in Stevenson’s Division, 2nd (Hoods) Corps.
The Battle of Kolb’s farm was fought on 22 June 1864. The first engagement came that afternoon. The 2nd Regiment was in the first line of Stevenson’s Division that charged over “unfavorable ground” and struck the enemy’s position at Kolb Farm near Kennesaw Mountain. The 2nd suffered eighty casualties, representing ten percent of Stevenson’s heavy losses. They were located on what is now Powder Springs Road.
The Macon Daily Telegraph dated June 29, 1864 lists the killed and wounded in the 2nd Regiment Georgia State Line in an assault on the enemy’s works on the evening of the 22nd of June. Those listed in Company E, commanded by Captain T. J. Neal, were none killed; B. F. Geesling was wounded with a contusion to the shoulder; D. Rice received a concussion; L. D. Dunn received a sever wound in both hips; E. J. Dean a slight finger wound; and J. D. Moon a slight neck wound. Evidently James D. Rice went by his middle name of David. (The only Rice’s listed on the muster rolls of Company E are James D. and Robert. See also the first paragraph of this paper.)"
