First, my thanks to Alan and George. Gentlemen, you have provided invaluable info regarding my gg-uncle, John F. Burk. Now for the questions: George, you referenced a record for JFB from Aug. 31, 1864. Can you advise me from where you got that info? My research has ended at Aug 31, 1863 as last record ( the card index). Alan, you wondered about the pension inquiry of 1916. I do too because JFB never married and his parents had already preceded him. Could there have been a generic "pension records review" in 1916 as I have seen others from that time period. There is no grave for him in the family plot, so I believe the family history that he never returned home from the war. I have checked at my local library (Marietta, GA) and there is no record of his interment in the Confederate Cemetery, though there are alot of unknown graves as well. It appears that his unit, 1st Confederate Infantry GA Volunteers was engaged both days of the Chickamauga battle. Sadly, he may be resting unknown among his fallen comrades. Ironically, the first marker on the field was that of a local boy from the 1st Conf. Inf. My next quest is to see the ranger historian at Chickamauga to see if they may have more info about casualties.
Once again my deepest thanks, and I still hope to solve this mystery. Any thoughts or sources I need to investigate please let me know.
