John M Rhodes 1st Cavalary Reg. FLA Union

I am seeking information on John M Rhodes that joined the 1st Cavalry Regiment Florida Union during the civil war.
My greatgrandfather John M Rhodes was born 1835 and was living in Coffee Co. ALA
in 1860. I know that he served in the civil war but cannot locate him in the CSA records.
I do find a John M Rhodes on Ancestry.com that joined the 1st Cavalry Regiment FLA
and it shows him to be killed June 2, 1865 in Coffee co. Alabama.

The story passed down to me by my ancestors was that our John Rhodes
was killed by the home guards on his return home from the service.
This does sound as though he could have been in the Union Army.
I also found a John M Rhodes that was part of the "Ward or
Rhodes Gang" that deserted in 1864 after 3 months service.
This John M Rhodes was in the Rhodes Gang with a James
Ward, and Jim Hutto..

If anyone has information (place of birth, where he lived, date of birth, etc.)
about the John M Rhodes that is listed on the muster roll of the 1st
Cavalry Regiment Florida Union, I would appreciate any help.
