What Upton and the Union did not report, the 49th Pennsylvania lost a flag (the only Union flag I have found, in Upton's attack) so far. The 49th PA led the attack in the center, it lost 50% of it's regiment. Grant was only successful attacking the "Mule Shoe" all other attacks failed. With huge losses on Union regiments.

The flag of the 49th PA was handed to General Lee. General Hancock first started the war as Colonel of the 49th PA.

The 39th New York also lost a flag, and that flag the 2nd Corps "claims" was the first flag, "ever" lost in the 2nd Corps. Now I know that is a complete lie, they lied about it all. They were always quick to point out what flags they captured, but very rarely mention flags they lost.

Of all the Union flags we have found, I believe their are hundreds more out there.
