2nd National Flag at Gettysburg

The news about the MOC flags being on-line shows some very nice timing. I have spent a few hours going through the list looking at the numerous flag images.

One of these flags ties in with the recent postings concerning the 32nd NC's National flag. In Rollin's book on Gettysburg flags he makes the arguement that the 32nd NC hurriedly modified their 3rd Bunting battleflag into a 2nd Natioanal flag while in Pennsylvania.

Take a look at War Department capture number WD124 on the MOC flag table. This flag's canton clearly is a 3rd Bunting flag. It sales out to very close to 48 inches square and the white edging on the battleflag is plainly visible. In addition, it is stated that this flag was captured at Spotsylvania by a menber of the 49th Pa.

The 49th Pa was one of the regiments participating in Upton's assault on Confederate lines on the evening of May 10. The attack struck Doles' and Daniel's brigades; the latter included the 32nd NC which lost at least 230 men ialong with their Colonel. Confederate losses also included, according to Upton's report, "several stand of colors".

Given both that the 32nd NC lost heavily in this attack and that the 32nd is known to have carried a "modified 3rd Bunting 2nd National flag" it is possible to conclude that WD124 is the flag of the 32nd NC.
