Re: MOC Flags

It is true, I believe between 300-400 Union flags were there. I am leaning more towards 400 and up, rather then the latter. The Union found around 250 of their captured flags. Of that 250 flags, they could only identify, 58. I found at the LOC, microfilm on the identified, Union colors captured.

I posted that on here. I was jumping out of my chair when I saw some of the Union regiments. The 12th Corps history claims "never lost a flag or gun." The 46th Pennsylvania was on that list, losing their "State Flag" at Chancellorsville. The 46th Pennsylvania was in the 12th Corps.

I am sure more 12th Corps flags were captured, no doubt on that at Chancellorsville.

Private J.S.Weber, from the 12th North Carolina did an astonishing feat. He captured an Infantry flag, Artillery flag and an Artillery flag.

The infantry flag was the 46th Pennsylvania.
Cavalry flag was the 8th Pennsylvania.
Artillery flag....Unknown.

The bigger the battle the more difficult it is to find captured Union flags. The Confederates reported capturing many in all big battles, but only a fraction ever made it to the generals headquarters. Many of the captured flags were kept by the generals or lower ranking soldiers. Never reported and not turned in, so your left with nothing.

I have well over 1,000 Union flags captured. The most difficult part will be to track them down and take pictures of them. The MOC, as about ten, I suppose.

Not too many Union brigades could brag about never losing a color. Grant's army certainly lost many flags at Shiloh. Probably 50-100 were found or captured. Murfreesboro and Chickamauga both the same. Both generals just reported what was turned in "to the proper authorities." So when you read of say 15-25, it more less means 25-100.

Now, of the 300-400 or even 500 Union flags that did make it to the Confederate War Department, certainly the bulk was from Lee's Army. Since Lee's Army was very close to Richmond, flags captured by the ANV, most likely were more turned in. The farther away and the less flags. I'm sure that occurred on both sides.

Overall, I am excited still with the project. All of you have been a HUGE help. Charles has been fantastic as well. We have around 50 people looking around and searching. The majority are here in Washington DC, but we do have others in other states.

Some are looking for flags from a particular state, North or South. My overall goal is to see all of you succeed on your future books. All this hard work we have done will not be in vain. Future generations will not have to go through what we had to.

After I finish that off, I will next move to "Union Artillery Captured" during the war. Set the record straight with that. Every battery even down to one tube will be documented. Might as well had in all "Union Battery Flags" captured as well.

Well wish I was 20 years younger! lol

Have a good evening,

Shawn Prouty
