Re: Flags of the 60th & 61st Tennessee

Hello,

There's more accounts of this battle and the lost flags in this book:

A Fit Representation of Pandemonium: East Tennessee Confederate Soldiers in the Campaign for Vicksburg by William D. Taylor. This is an excellent book that is very well researched and loaded with details on the battle at Big Black River.

Former Vicksburg park historian Terry Winschell also did a fine piece for Blue & Gray Magazine on the fight some years ago with terrific maps. Vaughan's Brigade basically got hammered that day.

The 62nd Tennessee saved their colors. This flag is at Beauvoir in southern Mississippi today. The 21st Arkansas also lost their flag.

Neither flag of the 60th and 61st Tennessee were sent to the Iowa state collection. The former is lost today and the latter flag I have tracked down to being in Oregon well after the war as the man that took it moved west.
