As mentioned, there is no basis for the often repeated story that this "elegant new flag" had been sent by the ladies of Richmond to General Lee "for him to present to the regiment most worthy of receiving and carrying it." For details on the claim of this bogus honor for the 32nd North Carolina in Daniel's Brigade, see Henry A. London, "Thirty-Second Regiment," included in Walter Clark, NC Regiments, 3:525. London, who wrote the article, was not even present at Carlisle. He was still a student at UNC at the times.
