Speaking of "drawers," if you haven't had the chance yet, tour the new MOC site at Appomattox. I think it's worth the drive, and (at least last fall--temporary exhibit) they had an entire display room with nothing but flags, all of which you can put your face right up to the glass (no smudges, please).
Additionally, they put something in their permanent exhibit that I hadn't seen before: below a conserved flag, a row of drawers (maybe six?) which the visitor may pull out, each holding an unconserved battle flag. It's a very cool "hands on experience" for the public. Much better than keeping them in the basement; a great idea and kudos to the museum staff. I'd love to see a bunch more of such drawers!
