I guess what I'm getting at is: what is the difference between the red & pink dyes that makes the red more stable? Is it possible that the pink flags were really that light in 1861? Col. Withers did complain to Beauregard that the flag he was given for the 18th Va. looked like a flag of surrender. that would have to be pretty light.
