Hi Ed,

I’ll have to look for my copies of the 1855 Army Reg’s. Prior to the CW all of the Federal issued National & Regimental Colors were embroidered. During the war most of the Federal issued stands of colors were painted, less expensive.

The Regular Artillery are the first to be authorized to carry the National Colors (Stars & Stripes) they had gold stars & gold color lettering, unit designation, around 1841.

The Regular Infantry was next, they switched from the US Arms (National Eagle) National Colors to the Stars & Strips around 1846, (again I’ll check that with the Reg’s when I get back to the shop). Stars and lettering Silver color. Do to the silver color turning black, if I recall correctly, it was the Quartermaster General that authorized the color change (1847) from silver to white, first, Army Reg’s later.

U. S. Garrison & Storm flags had & have white stars.

State Volunteer Infantry & Artillery, it depended on the State as to the color of the stars & lettering.

Happy Trails!
