“Early flags had the stars painted on them “[With] the early flags all the stars were silver, but when they got out in the field- the heat, the sun, the rain, the humidity- the stars tarnished and the stars became black; so that’s when they changed to gold stars.”
The Quartermaster General change the color of the star from silver to white for the Infantry National Colors, as the story said, the silver turn black. Gold or yellow star are for Artillery National Colors. However local / homemade or custom presentation flags did not always follow the official policy.
