The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: Update: Cleburne's Div, Missionary Ridge

Thank you everyone for the help! Tom, I will search my files on captured USCT flags, I do have some. The Crater is always the toughest, to dig on.

Fort Pillow, U.S.C.T regiment and organizations: 1st Battalion, 6th US Heavy Artillery, 8 officers and 213 men. One section Company D, Second US. Light Artillery, 1 officer and 40 men.

Fort Pillow, White units: 1st Battalion, 13th Tennessee Cavalry, 10 Officers and 285 men.

Total White soldiers: 295
Total black soldiers: 262

Grand Total: 557

Artillery: Two-Six Pounders, Two-Twelve Pound Howitzers and Two-Ten Pound Parrott Rifles.

So we have U.S.C.T flag captured possibles, all Artillery guidons and flags.

Brice's Crossroads, curious if the 55th USCT or 59th USCT lost a flag or guidon.

General Forrest at Athens, Alabama forced the 110th USCT to surrender on September 24th, 1864. What flags were captured, I don't know.

The 111th USCT was captured at "Sulphur Springs" by General Forrest on September 25th, 1864.

Sources on 110th and 111th USCT. "That Devil Forrest" by John Allan Wyeth. Page 430 for 110th USCT surrender and page 434 for surrender of the 111th USCT.

Crater USCT Flags captured: 28th USCT lost a flag to the 16th Virginia.

Guidon Marked "2" turned out to be the 2nd USCT'S brigade guidon, 41st Virginia captured that. Source: BG. Henry G. Thomas, "My Brigade guidon, captured by Private John W. Niles, Company D. 41st Virginia. Recaptured in Richmond, April 3rd, 1865. Another Source: "Battles and Leaders of the Civil War" by Robert Underwood, Clarence Slough Buel, Century Company, Page 565.

29th USCT lost their National Flag (The Horried Pit) by Alan Axelrod, Page 184 (Colonel John Bross, Killed).

54th Massachusetts lost their "State Flag" at Fort Wagner (OR. Vol 28, Series 1, Page 362).

18th USCT, Flag "Presented by the Colored Ladies of Murfreesboro" Captured at Nashville.

The Library of Congress has the following USCT Regimental Histories: Infantry--1-2-4-5-6-7-9-14-19-20-29-30-33-59 and 104th. I have a mark over the 19th USCT so I am guessing they lost a flag. Because I have the same mark over the 29th and 30th USCT.

There are plenty of Union flags captured at the Crater, that I still do not know what Union regiments they belonged to. I will continue the search, I have been up all night and morning so far. Time to take a nap and get ready for the Super Bowl!

Enjoy the Super Bowl everyone!
