Alan,

This makes perfect sense. Unless those ladies of Aberdeen that made the flag THOUGHT that Rucker still had the 6th Brigade command were part of Forrest's chain of command and thus privy to all communications between Forrest and his subordinates, then they had no clue that this brigade no longer existed. Rucker was too much of a gentleman to refuse it and when the 7th Alabama joined his new brigade he obviously chose one of its companies as his escort and they used this flag.

So if his escort used this flag, then why would it not have been with Rucker's Brigade in December, 1864? Why would there be the need to make yet another flag that resembled it in some respects when you already HAD such a "brigade" flag? It does not make sense.

Therefore I would argue that this Aberdeen presented flag was at the barricades on December 16th, 1864 with the rest of Rucker's Brigade when he and a flag were captured - and if we believe what Rucker told his captor that he was with the 12th Tennessee Cavalry (CS) at the time then it was their flag taken along with Rucker. As we know the flag in Alabama was never captured so this "brigade" flag is officially off the table for being captured there. By logical conclusion, the flag taken was the Mobile Depot flag of the 12th Tennessee Cavalry (CS).
