.. Just out of curiousity, and sake of process of elimination,... has the military record of the subject in question been examined to see if the individual may have had prior service in the cavalry before he might have been enlisted / transfered into the 16th ?.

Ive seen it a number of times whereas an individual initially enlisted in a different unit or branch of service such as a cavalry or artillery unit, and somewhere along the way either transfered or later conscripted into an Infantry unit. Thus the only existing image of the individual may have been one from his earlier tenure. Also if the subject was in more than one unit his military file may actually be in two parts, a separate file for each unit he served in.... Which also would give impression of two people with same name, that actually may or might not be.... May beed to examine files of both (all potential related) cases and see if the service time-lines co-exist and/or overlap or not... Just a thought.
