My best guess as of date of manufacture would be 1865 or 1866, and used out west in the Indian Wars (Red Cloud War). Serial number 24,000 ended about the end of the civil war 1865. So serial #28859 may have been manufactured in late 65 or sometime in 1866. Many Spencer carbines and a number of Spencer rifles were sent out west and used in the Indian Wars.
