According to the US War Dept. records during the war, They purchased 692,602,997 cartridges of the .58 and .577 Caliber. This doesn't include any .52, .54 or .56 cartridges. At the same time they purchased 6,021,220 cartridges of the .69 caliber buck and ball, or a little less than 1% of the rifled musket ammunition. Here is a note they gave: With the spherical ball ammunition used in these .69-caliber smooth-bore guns, recoil, noise, and smoke were the predominate results; while range and accuracy were of little importance. Compentent authorities claim that 120 yards was the average distance at which the balls struck the ground when fired horizonally at five feet above the level, and an enemy at the distance of 100 yards was comparately safe. This stat is for one .69 caliber round ball and not buck and ball. Firing buck and ball under the same conditions the range and accuracy would be even worse. I have fired buck and ball at a barn from my original 42 Springfield at about 100 yards and you could barely tell where the 31 caliber bucks dented the wood. one neat thing was the .69 caliber round ball had three little dents in it from pushing the three bucks. Hitting the enemy at 150 yards with a .31 caliber buck of a buck and ball shot, you had better hit him in the eye. To get close enough for buck and ball to be effective you would soon be a dead man against a rifled musket. Anyone who had a smooth-bore musket got rid of it the first chance he had. At Vicksburg some Grant's men had smooth-bore muskets, they soon were carrying Enfields from the captured confederates. I've not found any record of the amount of buck and ball produced or used by the confederacy, but I'm sure it was more than the Union army. Oh I'm sure someone was firing buck and ball right up to Appomattox, but it saw very little use late in the war, when you compare percent of bullets fired.
