Re: 2nd Arkansas Commander's

Damon ~

Circling back to your initial post regarding the resignation of Bocage;

It's no secret that he and Hindman had issues with each other, and I believe the officer that Hindman (via Hardee) replaced (or was planning to replace) Bocage with was John Sappington Marmaduke.

In R.W. Johnson's letter to Johnston, he makes mention of 'honor won by the Missourian...'
. Marmaduke was a Missourian and he and Hindman were chummy.

I have been searching for any reference indicating that Marmaduke took over for Hindman after the September promotions, but thus far have come up empty.

It's possible the transition never occurred officially.

We know Govan was promoted to Lt. Colonel November 21st....6 days after Bocage resigned and 3 days after the letter from Johnson. Govan was Arkansasn and competent and this move was probably the solution Hardee/Johnston needed in order to sooth both sides of the argument.

Thoughts ?
