Re: Organization, Army of the Southwest, 14 July 1

From my personal notes taken from The Alexander Papers:

July 11, 1862 Hindman to General Rust-In the reorganization now being effected, Hindman intends that each Brigade shall consist of three Regiments of Infantry one Btry of artillery and one squadron of Cavalry converting the excess of Cavalry above this allotment to Infantry ASAP and send the horses home.
In order to get the Infantry Regiments and cavalry squadrons desired he thinks it best if at all practicable to dismount Cavalry Regiments entire and make up the squadrons form among the incomplete Regiments and unattached Co’s of mounted men carefully selecting the best suited for Cavalry

I think it probably best to constitute a Tex division of 2 Brigades, one to be under Nelson as senior brigade commander whose opinions are to be sought, and the other of the best of the present Cavalry Regiment commanders again asking Nelson.
When Nelson is commanding the division his 2nd in command in his Brigade will lead his Brigade- Daniels’ and Pratt’s shall be the Btrys for this division.

Having organized the Texans a suitable organization of the Ark troops is desired. Looking to all the contingencies, I think the following would be the best arrangement:
1st Brigade-McRae’s and Pleasants’ Regiments and a Regiment to be formed by consolidating Matlock’s and McNeill’s commands
2nd Brigade-Morgan’s Regiment Albert Johnson’s Regiment and another to be formed of loose Co’s.

Matlock is not a Col but rather a Lt Co I am of the opinion that McNeill would make a better regimental commander. If there seems to be a reasonable possibility of McNeill’s other Co’s arriving it would probably not be best to consolidate the 2 commands

Regarding dismounting various Co’s of Ark mounted men now between White and Ark, I impose no restrictions on you except those that were detached by my order from Carroll’s Regiment-these to remain mounted for the present.

To give you a full understanding of what is intended, I am thinking of forming still another Ark Brigade to be composed of Grinstead’s Regiment, Dawson’s Regiment, and the various loose Co’s in south Arkansas. I have sent to Ft McCulloch for the 12 lb parrot guns there which will enable us to provide the necessary Btrys besides furnishing Gen Roan with one.

Regarding this plan of reorganization let me know of any problems so that we can make the reformation without 1 hours’ delay.
